Grilled Cheese Social Eatery

Cheesy Inspiration

We made the list!

The co-host of Hometown Hockey, Tara Slone, shares her favourite things to eat from places across Canada and our cute little Eatery made her list. This is what Tara shared with Chatelaine about her experience with us …

The dish: A mouthwatering grilled cheese sandwich

Downtown Barrie is filled with adorable, unique restaurants. I hit one of those, the Grilled Cheese Social Eatery, for a signature sandwich. My pick? The Spirit Catcher, named after the iconic sculpture on Barrie’s Kempenfelt Bay, for a mouthwatering mountain of Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses, with bacon, tomato, avocado and basil.

A shout out to Tara, Rogers Hometown Hockey, Chatelaine, and the City and residence of Barrie for all of the #love and encouragement.

Circle of Gratitude!

Something very symbolic, to the weekend we celebrate gratitude, happened at the eatery on Saturday.
When I opened my eatery 3 summers ago, my sister, was so kind to send me a painting to hang for all to enjoy. Sadly this painting went missing on one of the crazy late shifts that we used to open up for that first summer.
My sister being the ultimate optimist was excited by the fact that someone had actually heisted her painting and then generously sent me another painting to replace the one that was stolen.
The replacement painting has been displayed in the eatery for some months attracting many admirer’s and I can tell you I had become very attached to it as well.
On Friday I was contacted by a very sweet customer, who was interested in purchasing the painting. I told the woman that I would reach out and ask my sister if the painting was for sale.
When I contacted my sister she was very excited that someone was interested in her art enough to actually pay money for it and she exclaimed that the piece was absolutely for sale.
Between the three of us we were able to come up with a price and close the deal.
Now here comes the best part of this story.
My sister insisted, from the onset that all money received would be donated to the eatery’s ”Suspended” program. How cool is that?
12105822_759715567467000_3281362744075295340_nSo we have a painting that was a given to us to replace a painting that was stolen from us. We have a customer that was kind enough to ask about purchasing a piece of art she fell in love with while visiting the eatery. And we have a wonderful amount of money being donated to the suspended program because of these serendipitous turn of events.
This is truly a win win win situation.
My sister is so happy to have sold a piece of her art, the customer is so happy to not only encourage an emerging artist but also be able to help out her community, and we get to actually contribute many more‪#‎grilledcheese‬ to the less fortunate on the streets of the City of Barrie
We are extremely grateful for all who visit our eatery, for all who have contributed to our suspended program over the years, and for all the artists who have placed their works on our walls.
Happy ThanksGiving!
Right on!

”SUSPENDED” Grilled Cheese

Two teenagers came into the eatery a few days ago and with a reluctant shyness they approached me and presented me with a little over 50$. They spoke very few words as they handed me the money, but there actions will be heard by many.

When I started the ” SUSPENDED” sandwich and coffee program a few years ago I had no idea of the impact it would have on me, on others, and on the community.

The world is changing, we are softening, it may not always seem like it but when you look in the trenches, where it counts, the ones on the front lines are becoming more compassionate, tolerant, and caring. The random kindness of these two selfless young adults is all the proof I need.

A huge thanks to them and all the others that have and will donate!

We hope you have a wonderful day. Embrace the love!

Twas the Night Before Xmas in Barrie

Twas the night before Christmas, in #downtownBarrie.
The shoppers were stirring, wanting only to be merry.
The coffee was hot, in all of the trendy cafes.
It’s winter remember, what else can I say.

The shop owners were nestled all snug in their stores,
hoping for you to make what was theirs, yours.
Now I was in the kitchen, as the wind began to freeze.
At this point, I’m ready to make everyone grilled cheese.

When out on Dunlop Street there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the grill to see what was the matter.
I tore open the door and jump onto the sidewalk,
anxiously looking up and down the wide city block.

The sun beating down on this crisp winters day.
Kristen from Tropical North shouts over a ‘’Hey!’’
When, what to our wondering eyes should appear?
No not a miniature sleigh, and there were no reindeer.

It was actual a limo, a kind of black sedan.
We knew in a moment it must Jeff Lehman.
It wasn’t a surprise that the driver was Barrie Cabbie.
The mayor jumped out, not looking to shabby!

“Oye Ainsworth! Yo Romita! Hey Shipley and Ward!
Oh, Silveira! , Yo Brassard! Hey McCann and Khan!
Let’s get over to the Grilled Cheese Social Eatery!
Grab some lunch and check out the cool scenery!”

As the aging cheddar and the creamy brie await,
the soups getting hotter and we’re excited to plate.
So into the eatery the council did fly.
At this point Morales is wondering, Who is going to buy?

And then, the door opened and the entrance had started.
The smiles, the laughter, all of it whole hearted.
As they each took a seat, the last to be Mr. Prowse,
Dan in the kitchen said, ‘‘Dude, the mayor is in da house.’’

He was dressed all in black, from his head to his shoe.
He looked pretty cool with all of his crew.
A bundle of toys he had at his side.
We’re guessing donation for the Rock95 toy drive .

His eyes how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
He is, after all, the Mayor of the great city of Barrie!
His energy filled the room like a brilliant bright light,
and the hair on his head was as dark as the night.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
placed all the orders, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his debit card on the counter with ease,
‘’Lunch is on me’’ he announced with a breeze!!

Having placed all the orders he then sat with his peeps.
They all enjoyed their lunch, shouting ‘’this place is for keeps!”
It was time for them now to head back up the street.
Lots of taxes to lower, now that they have had their eats!

As Lehman jumped up, to his team he gave a whistle,
and away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere they drove out of sight,
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a grilled-night!”

Thank you!

Has anyone ever told you that you have a knack for making people feel special?
Important? Like they really matter?
We should know.
A million thanks, for all the support.
Happy Tuesday!

Happy Thursday

A few unknown facts observed to be mostly true by wise old souls:
1. What peeps claim to want less of – like work, challenges, and help – they actually want more of.
2. Those who say, “I don’t know what to do,” actually know exactly what to do.
3. And people who continue to show up in spite of self-doubt, confusion, and disappointment are the ones that rock this world.
Cool, huh?
What to do? How about #grilledcheese for lunch?
Happy Thursday!
